Located in the northern center of peninsular India, the City of Mumbai with its Bollywood fame, ancient cave temples at Ajanta and Ellora, the Bibi Ka Maqbara at Aurangabad, the Mahalakshmi temple in Kolhapur, the city of Pune the seat of the Maratha Empire, the fantastic Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Maharashtra is surrounded by the Arabian sea in the west, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh on the north, Madhya Pradesh in the east and Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on the south. Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra, which derives its name from the Goddess Mumba Devi.

Forts : The 350-odd forts of Maharashtra stand as silent sentinels to the history. Most of the forts in Maharashtra whether up in the hills or near the seas are associated with Shivaji --the great Maratha warrior and an equally great fort builder.

Maharashtra is the center of many religious and cultural traditions. Infact the life in many Maharashtrian villages, revolves around fairs and festivals. Some of the major festivals of Maharashtra are Buddha Purnima, Dussehra and Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, Gokul Ashtami, Gudhi Padwa, Holi, Mahavir Jayanti, Makar Sankranti, Nag Panchami, Narali Poornima and Raksha Bandhan.
