Assam, known as the rich, green land of rolling plains and dense forests, is the gateway to the north eastern part of India. The state is bordered in the North and East by the Kingdom of Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh while along the south lies Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Meghalaya lies to South-West of Assam while Bengal and Bangladesh to its West. Renowned for its tea, rich flora and fauna, the world famous one horned rhinoceros and other rare species of wildlife, Assam is perhaps next to Africa in terms of variety of wildlife.

 

Assam is the central state in the North-East Region of India and serves as the gateway to the rest of the Seven Sister States. Assam boasts of famous wildlife preserves – the Kaziranga National Park (pictured) and the Manas National Park, largest river island Majuli and tea-estates dating back to time of British Raj. The weather is mostly sub-tropical. Assam experiences the Indian monsoon and has one of the highest forest densities in India. The winter months (October to April) are the best time to visit.

 

Tourism


Each part of Assam has something to offer. Turbulent rivers, Blue Hills, Savage Terrains beckon the adventurers for sports like Angling, Trekking, Rock climbing, Mountaineering, etc. Also, Assam is one of the best destinations where one can encounter a great variety of rare and endangered wildlife. Twenty out of forty one listed endangered species of wildlife are found here. Many temples and monuments bear testimony to Tantric Shaktism, Shivaism and Vaishnavism. Assam is well known for tea and one horned rhinoceros.

 

Weather


Assam is never extremely cold or hot, though Assam has four well defined seasons in a year. Summer, monsoon, winter and spring these four seasons presents Assam in different moods. The neighbourhood of Cherapunji and Mawsynram are known to receive the highest rainfall in the world.

 

Places of Tourist Interest


It has a rich cultural heritage going back to the Ahom Dynasty which governed the region for many centuries before the British occupation. Other notable features include the Brahmaputra River, the mystery of the bird suicides in Jatinga, numerous temples including Kamakhya of Tantric sect, ruins of palaces, etc.

Adventure


One of the world's largest rivers, the Brahmaputra and it's tributaries flow through the state offering a wide network of rivers for various water sports. Also, Angling, river cruise, boat racing, river rafting, golf, trekking and mountaineering, mountain biking, para-sailing and hand gliding are the other activities in which tourists can induldge in.

 

Temples & Monuments


Most of the temples and monuments built during the medieval period represent the architectural style of the Koch, Kachari, Ahom royal courts and bear silent witness to a glorious past of Assam. Some of the temples & monuments in and around Guwahati which are popular are Kamakhya Temple, Nabagraha Temple, Umananda Temple, Basisthashram, Mahabhairab Temple, Madan Kamdev and Kamrupa. Da-Parbatia and Agnigarh are popular temples in and around Tezpur.

 

Festivals & Events


Bohag Bihu (Rangali Bihu), Magh Bihu (Bhogali Bihu) and the Kangali Bihu or Kati Bihu are the three Bihu festivals of Assam. The religious festivals like Ali-Ali Lignos festival, Ambubashi Mela in Kamakhya shrine, Sivaratri Mela at Umanand, Ashokastami Mela, Pausha mela and Parasuram Mela are also very popular. Also, the Tea Festival is celebrated in the month of November every month.

The best time to visit Assam is between October to April.
